At the Center for Restorative, Cosmetic, and Implant Dentistry, keeping our patients’ smiles healthy with general dentistry is our top priority. When it comes to oral health, periodontal or gum disease is one of the biggest threats. Over 50% of adults over thirty have some level of periodontal disease, which can lead to tooth and bone loss, as well as put you at risk for many other serious health problems. We strive to help our patients prevent gum disease, but when it occurs, we have effective periodontal therapy available.
Periodontal disease progresses in stages. The early stage, gingivitis, can often be reversed with better home care and more frequent professional cleanings. However, when the gums start receding and tissue damage begins to occur, more aggressive therapy may be required to stop the infection and allow the gums to heal.
Gum Infection Treatment
Stopping the infection in the gums that is present with periodontal disease is an ongoing battle. It requires not only daily home care but regular visits to our office for deep cleanings. At home, routine brushing, flossing and medication can be used to keep the bacteria that cause gum disease at bay. Deep cleanings at our office can remove hard to reach areas where plaque and tartar accumulate.
Scaling and Root Planing
One of the more effective treatments for gum disease is deep cleaning the roots of the teeth. Once the gums have receded, tartar can build up below the gum line. Scaling and root planing removes the tartar from the roots and smooths the surface. This, along with medication and home care, can help restore gum health.
